Subclasses 189, 190, 489

The application process for all most of the mentioned visas is similar. Positive skills assessment from the relevant authority, expression of interest to be submitted, meeting the migration points threshold, receiving an invitation from the Department to apply for a visa and meeting character and health requirements for all family members are mandatory all across. However, the key asks vary to a small extent basis the sub class of the visa.

Subclass 189 visa

It is an independent skilled visa which becomes permanent once granted. The visa requires the applicant to nominate an occupation on the medium to long term occupation list. The applicant subsequently receives an invitation from the department to apply for the visa.

  • Qualification Criteria- Must have an occupation that appears on the skilled shortage lists. A score of at least 65 points in a skills assessment, competent in English and aged under 45.

Subclass 190

This visa is a state nominated skilled visa which becomes permanent once granted. The applicant needs to be nominated by an Australian state government or state territory before an invitation is issued. The applicant can nominate an occupation on either the medium to long term list or the short term list. The applicant then needs to make a commitment to live and work in the nominating state territory for at least 2 years from the date of granting of the visa grant.

  • Qualification Criteria- Must be nominated by an Australian state or territory government agency, with an occupation from the skilled shortage lists of that particular state. A score of at least 65 points in a skills assessment, competent in English and aged under 45.

Subclass 489

It is a state nominated or family sponsored skilled visa, a temporary visa valid for four years. The visa holder needs to reside in the nominating state territory for at least 2 years from date of visa grant with at least 1 year full-time employment before applying for a permanent visa.

  • Qualification Criteria- Must be nominated by an Australian state or territory government agency or sponsored by an eligible relative living in a designated area, with an occupation from the relevant skilled occupation lists. A score of at least 65 points in a skills assessment, competent in English and aged under 45.
